The ministry of Promise Keepers was transformative for me and so many others. But if I’m honest, it feels like we don’t have as much momentum in ministry to men as we did in those days.
Wendell Morton is the Executive Director of Men’s Ministry Catalyst. He was in full-time ministry for 17 years with both small and large churches and spent four of those ministry years with Promise Keepers. He also spent 23 years in corporate America, building and leading sales teams.
Wendell has a passion to help pastors and church leaders build growing churches, and is particularly passionate about men’s ministry.
In today’s episode, we are talking about what differentiates men and women, the combination of strength and insecurity prevalent among men, why many pastors avoid focusing on men’s ministry, some fun Promise Keepers memories, and the best way to reach your community.

Key Takeaways
1) Men need to be connected to the Church first and foremost. This is God’s plan and this is how men find the community necessary to lead to real change in their life, in their family, and in the community.
2) It’s easy for leaders to avoid investing in men. Ministering to men can feel intimidating for a leader. Whether it’s power dynamics or insecurity at play, church leaders have to be intentional to step out of their comfort zone here.
3) Men are action-oriented by nature. They’re not relationship-oriented. They want to do something or go somewhere. They want to be taking action in some way. (And a bonus tip Wendell shared is that it takes an average of 3 invites for men to show up somewhere.) These realities need to inform our strategy.
4) “The best way a church can grow is by serving the community.” This truth is so important. To reach your community, you have to be externally-focused rather than internally-focused. This can actually tie into men’s ministry as well, with serve projects being a great opportunity to get men involved in something.
